That's an interesting thought, Tom. Reading the post over, it does seem odd that guilt isn't mentioned. (It's not like I don't carry around my share of guilt, both deserved and false.)

I suppose it's that the decision that I refer to when I was 18, wasn't really a question of right or wrong in an ethical sense. It was more a matter of which was more practical or perhaps more likely to lead to me or others being happy in the long run. Like choosing a career.

You're quite right, we have to be responsible for our decisions. Even if a prudent or moral decision has negative results, we have to be responsible for those consequences. And if a foolish or unethical decision happens to work out well, we should still feel guilty. Maybe even guiltier. :)

Julie: an interesting post, partly because the word guilt never appears. In part, I think that's a good approach, and yet the human capacity for guilt feelings is part of what makes us a moral animal. Perhaps accepting responsibility, an idea that seems implicit in what you say, is a better approach. And, as you imply, we have to accept responsibility for our actions, even though we often don't understand what the results will be. A situation demands a response, and we do the best we can. And, as you say, we can never know what would have happened if we had acted otherwise. But reason, which is as important a part of our nature as guilt, probably more so, demands that we look back on our past from time to time and analyze our mistakes and try to learn. But we'll never achieve a final answer. Tom
