Home Remedy
I have a cold and a particularly sore throat.
I’ve read that the best remedy for a cold is rest, and that works out fine for me. Unlike many people (especially many moms) I am perfectly able to rest when I am sick. In fact, I often practice resting just so that I’m in tip-top resting form in the event that I get sick. And it’s a good thing that all my resting skills are well-honed for times like this, when I need to spend the better part of 48 hours on the couch.
I have to keep my brain busy with something, and there isn’t much to watch these days on TV, so I spent some time on the internet searching somewhat randomly for whatever was interesting. There’s a lot out there. Here’s a few examples:
I’m sorry to admit that I have never read the works of Aldous Huxley or 1984 by George Orwell. However, after reading this summary of their dystopian predictions, I have to agree with the views attributed to Huxley. If you doubt this, 48 hours spent flipping through 500 TV channels will be most enlightening.

Apparently there is no sort of incompetence that can’t be addressed by a web site somewhere. I had a very fun-deprived childhood, and even I know how to do this. And since when do parents have to help kids build forts? And who decided there should be “better” methods? Don’t kids get to just play anymore?
There’s probably a site with the rules for Pineapple Bowling, too, but I couldn’t bear to look.

If, like me, you like to write, or have to write for school or some other purpose, you may have noticed how complicated it has become to properly cite source material. Books and periodicals are easy enough. It’s hard to know how to credit a website, or a podcast, or a tweet. For advice on how to cite some other alternative sources, check here.

I don’t spend much time on celebrity news, but Steve Carell isn’t usually much of a gossip topic, so this caught my eye. And it gives me some hope for the future. Even the future of celebrities.

Mark Twain wrote about his experiences attempting various home remedies for the common cold. . I thought I would see whether any new ideas had come along in the last hundred and fifty years or so, and found this remedy from India. I hate drinking milk, so the thought of milk with turmeric in it sounds worse than being sick.
I think I’ll stick with my own home remedy — vitamin water with just a touch of vodka. Don’t know if it cures anything, but I do feel better.
